Infineon’s CoolGaN lands in Chicony’s laptop chargers

Infineon is pushing gallium nitride into the lucrative world of laptop bricks.

Infineon Technologies AG has revealed that Chicony Power has selected its CoolGaN Transistors G5 for multiple high-power notebook adapters for a top customer’s machines.

For those who came in late, GaN is meant to shrink chargers, cut waste heat and make the whole setup feel a bit less like carrying a hot paving slab.

At the centre of the design are CoolGaN Transistors G5, tuned for fast switching and low conduction losses across a wide range of operating conditions.

Infineon says its high-voltage GaN parts lean on a hybrid-drain GIT (gate injection transistor) base, claiming rugged gate behaviour, better dynamic Rdson and hard-switching performance and higher saturation current.

It adds that the G5 generation delivers up to 30 per cent better figures of merit, such as RDS(on) Qg, compared to the previous family.

Infineon, head of the GaN business line Johannes Schoiswohl said: “The CoolGaN Transistors G5 embody our commitment to reliable, high-performance power semiconductors. Partnering with Chicony Power on the top customer’s adapter underscores how GaN enables tangible end-user benefits, smaller size, faster charging, and lower energy consumption, without compromising robustness,”

Chicony Power, VP R&D Yang Wang said: “Infineon’s CoolGaN Transistors G5 give us the design headroom to push power density and efficiency into a compact footprint. This collaboration helps deliver charging solutions aligned with the premium user experience our notebook customers expect.”

Chicony’s engineering work relies on a high-frequency power architecture, with PFC and DC/DC stages designed to exploit GaN’s switching speed.

The company is claiming it kept an eye on EMI too, tuning layout, filtering and switching profiles to cut noise and keep compliance margins healthy.

The design is said to run cooler while sustaining 100 to 300 W output in compact mechanical envelopes.

Infineon is talking up momentum, saying it has made more than 40 new GaN product announcements in the past year.

It is pushing 300 mm GaN manufacturing as the next scaling trick, with first samples already shipping, and it is clearly betting the adapter market will keep swallowing these parts.
