Apple’s OLED iPad mini gets a maxi price

The Fruity Cargo Cult Apple has unveiled an OLED iPad mini with an A20 Pro processor and a $200 increase in its starting price.

According to Neowin, the smallest tablet now starts at $699. It would appear that Job’s Mob has decided that miniaturisation should stop at the invoice.

An 8.5-inch Super Retina XDR screen replaces the LCD, offering a claimed 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio and peak brightness of 1,200 nits. Full-screen brightness reaches 600 nits, while buyers can choose nano-texture glass. The chassis measures 5.4mm thick and carries IP67 protection.

Apple claims its 2nm A20 Pro delivers up to 60 per cent faster multithreaded CPU performance and 2.7 times the graphics performance of the A17 Pro model. Connectivity includes Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thread through Apple’s N1 chip. Cellular versions use its C2 modem.

A landscape-oriented 12MP Centre Stage front camera joins a 12MP rear camera. It supports the Apple Pencil Pro and the USB-C Pencil. Storage options are 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB, with Midnight and Starlight finishes. Cellular models start at $849.

Pre-orders open on 28 October, with shipping scheduled for 6 November.
