AMD edges towards multi-frame generation in FSR

AMD looks like it is finally building the missing bit of its frame-gen story.

Fresh additions to the FidelityFX SDK hint that Radeon is getting its multi-frame generation, or “MFG”, to match what rivals have been flogging for months.

FSR Redstone is AMD’s latest tech bundle for Radeon GPUs, rolling in updated upscaling, refreshed frame generation and ray regeneration, with AI and machine learning doing the grunt work.

The awkward gap has been multi-frame generation, where users pick different frame-gen ratios rather than sticking to a single setting.

AMD’s FSR 4 frame generation tops out at a 2x mode, while NVIDIA pushed multi-frame generation with RTX 50 hardware at up to 4x, then stretched DLSS 4.5 to a “MFG 6X” option.

Nvidia has thrown in dynamic frame generation, which adjusts the MFG ratio to match your monitor’s refresh rate instead of leaving you to fiddle with toggles.

Intel joined the party this year with XeSS 3, offering up to 4x modes on Arc B-series, Arc A-series and integrated GPUs.

Now AMD has dropped early plumbing into the ADLX FidelityFX SDK, adding “IADLX3DFidelityDXFrameGenUpgradeRatioOption” so users can pick a frame-generation ratio for the usual performance-versus-visuals trade-off.

That is the same basic idea as existing MFG setups, where the ratio choice matters on GPUs that support it and is pointless on non-MFG kit that just does the standard 2x boost.

If this lands properly, it should help Radeon hardware cope as games get nastier to run, especially when path tracing and other eye-candy start eating frame time for breakfast.

AMD is still teasing “FSR Diamond” for future hardware, with the likely targets being the next PlayStation and Xbox consoles and RDNA 5 GPUs, which means the arms race is heading for your living room.
