AMD’s Chief Software Officer, Andrej Zdravkovic, and Senior Director of Software, Terry Makedon, confirmed during Computex 2026 that the FSR 4.1 on RDNA 3 GPUs will have a comparable image quality to that running on RDNA 4 GPUs, despite using a different model.
Talking to Techpowerup.com, AMD confirmed that FSR 4.1 will focus on bringing the same image quality on both RDNA 4 and RDNA 3 GPUs, despite the fact that both use different upscaling models and that RDNA 4-based GPUs use 2nd generation AI accelerators, supporting both FP8 and INT8 data, while RDNA 3 can only support INT8. This means that AMD has to convert those same AI models, ensuring that the output image quality remains good on both versions.
According to the same report, bringing FSR 4.1 to older RDNA 2 GPUs, which AMD promised earlier, will be a bit harder as RDNA 2 GPUs lack dedicated AI accelerators, so it must solely run on GPU compute units. This also means that AMD has to make changes to those AI models, which means a lot more optimizations on the software side.
In case you missed it earlier, AMD promised that FSR 4.1 will be available on all AMD DirectX 12 Ultimate graphics cards and come to RDNA 3 GPUs later next month, while RDNA 2 GPUs should get it in “early 2027”.
