The Fruity Cargo Cult Apple’s M5 Max MacBook Pro is allegedly cooking itself so hard that even the delete key has sought sanctuary.
According to mutterings on Reddit, the M5 Max relies on two low-profile fans and a single heatpipe. That sounds brave when Job’s Mob is stuffing ever more power into a thin aluminium confessional.
One MacBook Pro owner found that the heat apparently caused the backspace key, labelled “delete,” to sink into the chassis. He got the privilege of visiting Jobs’ Mob’s retail temple for a repair quote from the so-called genius.
The bill would have been $895 without warranty cover. Unconfirmed claims say custom M5 Max MacBook Pro configurations are coming from China with dodgy quality control. That is not proven, but it does mean that Apple fanboys do not have to question their faith.
Previous stress tests suggest the M5 Max has slightly better thermals than the M4 Max, thanks to the new Fusion Architecture. The catch is that heavy workloads can still push the machine past 100°C in seconds.
For Redditor “rinsewin,” the heat might have been bearable if the delete key had not got caught in the chassis. His theory is that the key sits next to the exhaust vent, making it more vulnerable to warping.
Job’s Mob has used this cooling layout for years while its chip power limits have kept climbing. That might explain why rumours now point to vapour chamber cooling in newer models.
This was reportedly the second time the same problem hit rinsewin. Without warranty, the stuck key would have turned into an $895 lesson in buying thin laptops with cathedral pricing.
Another M5 Max MacBook Pro heat complaint involved display discolouration. It remains unclear whether that was caused by a hardware fault or excessive heat giving the mini-LED panel a little religious experience.
Other reports say the NAND flash can reach 100°C during demanding AI workloads. These machines use PCIe NVMe Gen 5 SSDs, so high temperatures are not exactly shocking.
Still, expecting users to stay calm while a laptop crosses 100°C is optimistic. A beefier cooling system should not be treated like heresy when the silicon is running this hot.
Job’s Mob’s latest chips may be designed to run toasty for hours. That does not mean the rest of the machine should be left to sweat like a sinner in confession.
