Intel is reportedly gearing up to whack its consumer CPU prices this year, just as its Core Ultra 200S Plus parts have started looking half-decent.
The word from supply chain sources is a cumulative rise of as much as 30 per cent across the year, driven by enterprise demand that is hoovering up capacity. That number could shift depending on how hard the data centre crowd keeps leaning on the order books.
Shortages are now creeping into the CPU market due to the AI infrastructure buildout, and the retail channel is already showing strain. Reports say Arrow Lake Refresh chips have been appearing at street prices above MSRP, which is never a comforting sign.
Chipzilla’s problem is that it must feed both enterprise and consumer lines from its own fabs, using nodes such as Intel 7 and Intel 3. Capacity utilisation is getting tight, meaning demand is higher than it can comfortably serve.
The surge is being pinned on the AI sector, with “agentic AI” cited as a key driver of the current rush. Chipzilla is reportedly tilting towards AI and enterprise because volumes are higher and margins are juicier.
The same squeeze is hitting AMD, but it is holding off on price hikes for now. It leans on TSMC for foundry work, and the Taiwanese giant is running at higher utilisation, giving AMD more breathing room.
AMD chief executive Lisa Su has acknowledged that demand for server CPUs is incredible right now, which is corporate-speak for “we are not leaving that money on the table”. That leaves gamers competing with rack-mount monsters for supply, and compromises tend to land on the consumer side.
Arrow Lake Refresh had been shaping up as a solid play thanks to attractive MSRPs and decent performance against AMD’s equivalents. If the higher pricing sticks, that goodwill could vanish fast.
The pain is not expected to stop at Arrow Lake either. Older lines like Raptor Lake are reportedly in the blast radius, so anyone hoping for a cheap upgrade might want to keep their wallet somewhere safe.
