Micron ships 6600 ION SSD with 245TB capacity for data centers and AI storage

Micron has announced the availability of its 6600 ION SSD in a 245TB capacity, positioning it as the highest-capacity commercially available solid-state drive and targeting large-scale AI, cloud, and hyperscale data center workloads.

The 6600 ION is built on Micron’s G9 QLC NAND and comes in U.2 and E3.L form factors, enabling significantly higher storage density per rack compared to traditional HDD-based deployments. The company claims the drive can reduce rack requirements by over 80% for equivalent capacity, while also lowering power and cooling demands without compromising performance for data-intensive applications.

Power efficiency is a key focus, with the drive consuming up to 30W at peak, roughly half that of comparable HDD setups. Micron positions this as a major advantage for data centers under increasing pressure to optimize energy use, reduce operational costs, and scale AI infrastructure within existing power and space constraints.

Performance improvements are also highlighted, particularly for AI and object storage workloads, where the SSD delivers higher throughput, lower latency, and significantly better efficiency per watt compared to HDD-based systems. These gains are aimed at accelerating data pipelines while improving overall system responsiveness at scale.

“AI workloads are driving massive growth in shared data, continuing the shift of data center storage share from HDDs toward SSDs. With 245TB in a single SSD, the Micron 6600 ION makes solid state storage the clear choice for modern data centers,” said Jeremy Werner, senior vice president and general manager of Micron’s Core Data Center Business Unit. “This breakthrough capacity gives data center operators a critical new lever to improve rack-level total cost of ownership, especially as power availability becomes a defining constraint for AI infrastructure scale.”

The Micron 6600 ION 245TB SSD is now shipping and will be showcased in Dell storage systems for AI-focused deployments, as the company continues to push higher-capacity flash storage for next-generation data centers.
