Microsoft prepares own goal with Windows 10 S

by on04 May 2017

Forcing itself onto the Edge

Software king of the world Microsoft is set to undo itself completely over Windows 10 by forcing punters to use its Edge browser and its god-awful Bing search engine.

In a move which will be of interest to regulators throughout the world Windows 10 S will not allow you to change the browser default. So, while you can download Chrome or Firefox from the Windows Store, you will automatically get Edge by default.

Buried in the Windows 10 S FAQ, the following question is presented -- "Are there any defaults that I cannot change on my Windows 10 S PC?"

"Yes, Microsoft Edge is the default web browser on Microsoft 10 S. You are able to download another browser that might be available from the Windows Store, but Microsoft Edge will remain the default if, for example, you open an .htm file. Additionally, the default search provider in Microsoft Edge and Internet Explorer cannot be changed."

It is odd to us as it seems that Microsoft seriously has been taking Steve Jobs’ “total arse” pills of late. Firstly, it forced a lot of users to upgrade to Windows 10 with the most annoying upgrade software ever, and now it appears to think it can force users to use Edge.

It is not clear who is a winner from this move. Even if users do use Edge more often, it is not as if Microsoft is going to get more cash. What is more likely is that Vole is going to get a good kicking from regulators worldwide for playing monopoly. Since the case is identical to the last time Microsoft was convicted of doing the same thing with Explorer the regulator is going to want blood and steep fines.

Meanwhile users who don’t like this sort of thing might be forced to change operating systems, or look to unauthorised patches.

It is all so unnecessary and stupid and should cost someone her or his job.
