VideoLAN showcased its new VLC 4 build at the CES 2026 show in Las Vegas, which was running AV2 video playback on a regular laptop.
With the VLC 4.0 still in development, VideoLAN plans to integrate it when the AOMedia AV2 launches its next open video codec later this year. According to AOMedia, AV2 should improve compression and, most importantly, keep the same royalty-free patent policy. According to VideoLAN’s post at Twitter, it should bring 30 percent bandwidth saving compared to AV1 and also be better for screen streaming.
The demo is running at the CES 2026 show.
