Xbox brings original Xbox backward compatibility to PC in early release

Microsoft has officially launched the first version of Xbox Backward Compatibility on PC, allowing players to enjoy original Xbox games on Windows for the first time through an official solution. The feature enters an early release phase with four classic titles: BLiNX: The Time Sweeper, Conker: Live & Reloaded, Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge, and Fuzion Frenzy. All four are available through Xbox Game Pass, while players who already own a digital license can also access them on PC.

Microsoft says this is only the beginning of a larger effort to bring more original Xbox games to Windows, with additional titles and new features planned over time. The company wants to make it easier for players to carry their game libraries across generations without leaving older titles behind.

These aren’t simple ports either. Xbox has added several PC-specific enhancements, including support for up to 4x resolution scaling, improved anti-aliasing, anisotropic filtering, V-Sync, and both fullscreen and windowed display modes. Players can also customize language and audio settings without affecting the original gameplay experience.

Another long-requested feature is also on the way. Microsoft confirmed that Achievements will be added to select original Xbox games later this year on both PC and Xbox consoles, with the first four supported titles receiving the update in the coming months. The feature is designed to work not only on desktop PCs and laptops but also on Windows gaming handhelds, including the ROG Xbox Ally and Xbox Ally X.

Microsoft has also published the hardware requirements for the new compatibility layer. The minimum specification calls for a quad-core processor, 8GB of memory, Windows 11, and a graphics card equivalent to a GeForce GTX 950, Radeon RX 550, Intel UHD 770, or Arc A310. For the best experience, the company recommends a six-core CPU paired with a GeForce GTX 1070 Ti, Radeon RX 6800, or Intel Arc A770 and at least 8GB of graphics memory.

Microsoft says this is just the first step, with more original Xbox games expected to join the compatibility program as it expands over the coming months.
