Atari looks to sell the rights

Missile Command might be on its way to a movie theater near you if Atari is successful in selling the movie rights for its 1980 arcade classic. Whispers suggest that there is at least some interest in adapting the arcade game into a film.

Sources are suggesting that the movie will follow in the footsteps of Asteroids, which had its film rights purchased by heavy hitter Universal last year. While Atari has reportedly been making the rounds talking up the potential for a Missile Command movie, it would appear that sources suggest that Fox Entertainment seems to be in the driver’s seat to acquire the movie rights.

Atari is said to also be looking at the potential of other arcade titles for their potential on the big screen. While no names have been actually mentioned on other games Atari thinks might have movie potential, it would seem that there is interest for film adaptations.

While we have no clue how you take arcade games from the 80s and make them into movies that people will really want to see, it will be worth it to at least see studios try. It is difficult to predict what kind of take you would see in a Missile Command movie, but some form of spin on nuclear holocaust does seem all but assured. Who knows? It actually might be an interesting project if you add the special effects from a Michael Bay-style film, but it might not be all that watchable.
