AMD left the would-be flagship off its CES 2026 keynote, and enthusiasts noticed straight away.
Instead, AMD wheeled out the Ryzen 7 9850X3D as its latest 3D V-Cache refresh, boasting higher clocks and a seven per cent average bump versus the Ryzen 7 9800X3D.
The chip is due this quarter, but the crowd was waiting for the rumoured dual-stacked part, the Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 with “Dual 3D V-Cache”.
AMD did not announce it on stage, yet CES attendees say the company hinted they should “Stay Tuned” for what comes next, via Computerbase.
That would be easier to dismiss as show-floor fluff if AMD had not also posted press images for the Ryzen 7 9850X3D showing a dual-CCD package.
It could be a simple case of someone reusing old launch assets from the 9950X and 9950X3D era, but it also looks like a plan that got yanked late.
Gigabyte then joined the teasing at CES 2026, talking up next-gen “Ryzen 9000X3D” refresh chips with “More Cores, Higher Clocks, Greater Potential”.
Since the Ryzen 7 9850X3D keeps the same core count and the Ryzen 9 9950X3D already launched last year, that Gigabyte line reads like a nod to a bigger cache monster.
If the whispers are right, the Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 would be a 16-core, 32-thread Zen 5 flagship with a 200W TDP and a frankly daft 192MB cache.
It is said to keep a 4.30GHz base clock, while topping out at 5.6GHz boost, which is 100MHz lower than the 9950X3D and the 9950X.
For comparison, the Ryzen 9 9950X3D runs 16 cores and 32 threads up to 5.7GHz at 170W, with 128MB of L3 cache split across one X3D CCD and one standard CCD.
The claimed trick on the X3D2 is stacking extra cache on the second die as well, pushing it to 192MB and letting AMD chase bragging rights on mainstream desktop.
The obvious play is for AMD to drop the Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 on the same day it ships the Ryzen 7 9850X3D, because staggered launches are the easiest way to keep the hype machine fed.
