Dell support claims laptops shouldn't be used on lap

A Swedish
reader got in touch with us and shared his rather uncomfortable experience with Dell's XPS 1730 laptop, which burned his legs quite badly after he used it just once.

Following the incident, he got a doctor's note documenting his injuries and got in touch with Dell support, which said he should have more sense than to use its laptop in his lap. Dell refused to take the unit back, and it also refused to provide any sort of compensation for the injuries, as they claim that there's nothing wrong with the laptop.

The doctor's note says the user couldn't feel the initial pain due to a previously suffered back injury which reduced his ability to feel pain in his legs. So, he kept using the computer till it was too late, and the doctor could do nothing more but confirm he had two palm sized burns on his legs. All he's asking for is that Dell gives him a refund and for them to pay for his doctors bill, which is a mere 500SEK ($60/€45).

It's true the XPS 1730 is a performance laptop, and that it can heat up under load, but at the same time, the fact that it can cause such injuries after using it just once is quite unnerving. Our reader has reduced sense of touch in his lower extremities, so he couldn't feel the heat, but imagine what would happen to, say a paraplegic in a similar scenario?
