Tablets mainly used for gaming

by on11 April 2011

Not pointless after all
A recent Google survey has revealed some quite interesting trends in the tablet market, and the figures indicate that tablets really aren’t being used for what they were originally designed.

While Apple believes tablets should be used to surf the web, read books or enjoy multimedia content, users beg to differ. A surprising 84 percent of tablet users claim that they primarily use them for gaming, while 46 percent read books on their shiny toys. Although tablets are truly mobile rather than merely portable computers, 82 percent of tablet owners use them at home, mostly at night. Only 7 percent are used in the workplace.

The figures are somewhat surprising, especially considering the lack of focus on tablet gaming by major developers and even the vendors. However, things are changing. Nvidia’s Tegra 2 and Apple’s A5 processors pack quite a punch and with so much interest on the part of consumers, it is only a matter of time before we start seeing more and more proper games adapted for the new form factor.

As for books, just get a Kindle or, even better, a real book. Librarians are a rather pleasant lot, we should keep them in business.
