Hitachi 4TB hard drive spotted in the wild

by on09 December 2011

1TB platters, SATA 6Gbps, flood proof

The first 4TB desktop drive has been spotted in a messy Japanese retail warehouse.

Although Hitachi and Seagate have already announced external 4TB drives, this seems to be the first desktop 3.5-inch model.

The drive is part of Hitachi’s Deskstar 5K series, and of course it’s a SATA 6Gbps drive. It also has 32MB of cache and density was increased through the use of 4KB instead of 512B sectors. The drive is selling for 26,800 yen, or 257 euro.

A few shops in Europe are listing a somewhat faster 7200rpm Deskstar 7K unit, with 64MB of cache. The list price in Germany is €499 and one British retailer is listing it at €228. Obviously the latter price sounds a bit more realistic, as 3TB drives usually retail at €180 to €190.
