Intel sticks to WiMAX in 2012

by on27 March 2012

Cannot let go

When it comes to notebook computing Intel cannot let WiMAX go. Even though WiMAX is technically 4G none of USA networks major mobile providers have chosen it as a standard for their 4G networks and it doesn’t look that great for Europe either. In the long run LTE looks like 4G of the future for most carriers.

Despite this, Intel’s wireless performance roadmap includes a lot of WiMAX. The year 2012 for Intel wireless won’t bring much innovation as the currently available Intel Centrino Ultimate N 6300 codenamed Puma Peak remains the top offer for the rest of the year and Q1 2013.

In the WiMAX performance market sector Intel Centrino Wireless N WiMAX 6150 previously codenamed Kelsey Peak 1x2BGN aims to be the runner up om the WiMAX Wi-Fi performance market.

The top card for 2012 and Q1 2013 is Intel Centrino Wireless N WiMAX 6250, also currently available card previously codenamed Kilmer peak. It is a 2x2 bgn device and they are both compatible with Huron river and soon to launch Chief River notebooks.

Let’s hope that when it comes to notebooks Intel can make its own 4G based on LTE as a part of future Wi-Fi notebook cards, as we are very sure that there is a huge market for such devices. Unfortunately this can happen in 2013 and later but not this year.
