We have confirmed that the Asus Eee PC 4G-X is now in stock on the BestBuy Web site and is available for in-store pickup at select store locations. From what we can tell they have units in stock and they will ship within one day of the order.

Getting the Eee PC 4G-X into Best Buy is quite a coup for Asus who has been seeking to expand their mainstream brand awareness in areas outside of the typical PC enthusiasts. With the Eee PC being sold in a Windows XP configuration in BestBuy locations this achieves a mainstream presence that Asus has never really had previously at the brick and mortar level.

The PC 4G-X is being sold for US$399 and it will come with Windows XP Home and will be powered by an Intel Celeron M processor clocked at 900MHz. It will also include a 4GB SSD for storage, 512MB of DDR2, and a 7-inch 800x480 LCD display.

Asus was able to price the Eee PC 4G-X at $399, mainly thanks to an agreement with Microsoft which lowered the price of XP to under $40 per unit.

It will be interesting to see how consumers respond to the Eee PC and if it flies off the shelves at the retail level as it has in the online world. For those needing a second PC and who want one that runs Windows XP, this is an interesting solution, but one has to wonder if ULPCs will really be something that consumers will continue to want with its relatively small drive and limited expansion options.

For a second computer that is used mostly for Web surfing and Email, we do think that the ULPCs do work well in this realm, but beyond these types of applications, there are other options that just might make a little more sense to consumers.
