PS3 Firmware 4.20 to roll today
A number of fixes and tweaks
Sony will be rolling out version 4.20 of the PlayStation 3 firmware starting today. Version 4.20 is comprised of a number of system tweaks and some new additions to get the most out of the system.
Perhaps the biggest change will be the new power savings by default, with the unit now turning itself off after 1 hour of inactivity. Called the System Auto-Off selection under Settings in the dashboard, the option is turned on by default, but can be disabled should the need arise.
A time-saving feature will finally allow the multiple selections of saved data items for a mass delete, rather than having to pick them and delete them one at a time. This one has apparently been in the works for a bit, but only is it now making its way to being added in version 4.20.
Sony is also making some tweaks to the audio sides of things by allowing players to hear their voice through the headset with a feature called Sidetone. The new firmware will allow for the adjustment of feedback by allowing the player to select from one of five volumes for the microphone, or they can turn the feature off altogether if they like. In addition, virtual surround sound mode will be enabled when playing back Blu-ray or DVD content to the wireless stereo headset.
It is expected that Sony will follow their standard rollout strategy, with most users getting the update at some point tomorrow.
