400 million iOS devices shipped to date

by on13 September 2012

Apple is just getting started

Apple archbishop Tim Cook claims that 400 million iOS devices have been sold over the past five years.

iPhones account for the vast majority of iOS gear out there, but the iPad is also doing strong, with 84 million units and there’s also a few iPods in the mix.

The figures are quite impressive and although Android still leads the way in overall activations, Apple enjoys a handsome lead in terms of revenue and margins. In addition the iPhone 5 and iPad mini have the potential to boost sales even further. The new iPhone will be a runaway success and the iPad mini? Well, we still don’t know much about it, but a cheaper and smaller iPad could also add a few million units a month.

In the big scheme of things Android will retain its lead in sheer numbers and with 1.3 million activations it will not be long until activations hit the 1 billion mark. However, thanks to higher margins and average selling prices iOS is true cash cow of the mobile market and this won’t change in the foreseeable future.
