Spring before Wii U firmware update is included

The large day one download blues will continue

Nintendo has admitted that Wii U consoles that will incorporate the current day one system update download will not be available till at least spring next year. While March is still a long way off, it is a bump in the road that was necessary for Wii U owners.

As we have covered, the day one firmware update (which adds Nintendo Network support as well as a variety of other online functionality) has been a topic of much discussion due to the amount of time it takes to download and apply the update. Many users have complained that the Wii U should be ready to use out of the box; and while the update was necessary to give the developers the maximum time to develop the unit before release, the update process is clearly much longer and lacks enough visual feedback during the process.
