Windows Explorer 11 still alive, despite Edge

Just a week after Windows 10 10.0.10061 appeared, Microsoft has released yet another version.

This comes as no surprise, since Microsoft just concluded its Build conference where it shared a few details about Windows 10, DirectX 12 as well as other hot topics.

The last Windows update brought us a new Mail app, Calendar, MSN Weather, MSN Money and a few updates on the Start menu, Windows themes as well as the legendary Microsoft Solitaire Collection.

The new update, Windows 10.0.10074, that is available via Windows update in the fast and slow update distributions, is bring Cortana integration to the Smart Menu. The new Windows 10 build brings enhancements to Live Tiles, including new animations as well as the option to disable Live Tiles. It comes with an improved user interface for the Start menu, as well as new sounds for multiple actions.

We even tried to hook up the machine to an Acer XB280HK 4K G-SYNC monitor. It works just fine and Windows 10 scales much better than Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 which we tried on 4K so far.

We have to notice that Windows 10 feels really mature. We ended up playing Tomb Raider 2013 on the new Intel NUC powered with HD 6000 graphics and the brand new Broadwell Core i5 5250U processor. We used a 2013 game and we were surprised that at 1920x1080 we got nearly playable scores, although 1600x1080 worked much better.

Our test hardware includes:

  • Intel NUC with Intel Core i5 Processor (NUC5i5RYK)
  • Intel Corei5-5250U processor 1.6GHz up to 2.7GHz Turbo dual core, 3MB Cache, 15W TDP
  • Kingston Impact SODIMM - 16GB Module DDR3L 1866MHz CL11 SODIMM
  • at 1600MHz, 10-10-10, 1.35V
  • Intel HD 6000 graphics
  • Samsung XP941 256GB M.2 SSD

This machine works even better than our previous testbed based on the older NUC with Haswell Core i5 4250U, and we saw more than 1GB/s write speeds with Samsung XP941 256GB M.2 SSD which is more than twice what we got from the mSATA setup on Haswell.

We were surprised to see the Internet Explorer 11 still alive on this platform. Microsoft used to call its new browser project Spartan and renamed it to Microsoft Edge just days ago. We found a way to get back to the traditional Internet Explorer if you miss it. You open a website and in the browser properties menu you can still choose the "open with Internet Explorer 11" option and continue using it as a standalone browser.
