Hell freezes over, pigs fly

In a very unexpected announcement, Creative has released GNU GPL v2 Linux drivers with source code for its X-Fi and X-Fi Titanium series of sound cards for both 32 and 64-bit operating systems. There are some limitations, but this is something the community has been waiting for, for a very long time.

The current driver versions supports ALSA PCM playback, record and mixer functions. This might be the most basic of features, but it's vastly better than nothing at all. Currently, there's no support for the external I/O modules some of the more high-end models come with, but we'd expect someone to work this out in due time.

We'd expect a wide range of people jumping at the opportunity to be able to develop their own Linux drivers for the X-Fi cards and implement the missing features and add some of their own. We can't wait to see what happens, but it might be some time before we see full feature support; but it's great to see that Creative has finally come to its senses.
