Off to a surprising start on the platform

When it
was announced that Netflix would be releasing their streaming software for the Nintendo Wii platform, many didn’t know what to think. The lack of HD support, coupled with the fact that the platform isn’t really known for its multimedia abilities outside of gaming, led many to think that it just would not be popular.

Surprisingly, however, Netflix is reporting that over 1 million users have requested the necessary disc and are streaming content using their Wii. It looks that the lack of HD support isn’t the issue that many thought it would be; and the best news is that more Wii users are connecting their consoles to the Internet because it is required to use the Netflix streaming software. As has been reported many times in the past, Wii users are less likely to connect their consoles to the Internet than owners of the Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3.

With the Wii having an installed user base of an estimated 26 million, if Netflix is able to get a significant number of these users to subscribe to Netflix it could be a big boost to their subscriber numbers. Some rumors seem to suggest that if Netflix is able to gain enough traction on the platform Nintendo might take another look at giving the company a presence on the dashboard itself and do away with the need for the disc, but right now that is little more than just talk.
