The second wave of ultrabooks is set to launch at the Consumer Electronics Show next year and it will include the first designs from HP, Samsung and Dell. In addition, several vendors who have already launched ultrabooks are expected to refresh their lineups at the show.
Digitimes reckons that anywhere from 30 to 50 ultrabook models will appear at CES and they are expected to be the hottest thing in early 2012. This sort of shows how little is actually going on in the industry. The most interesting products for 2012 are basically knockoffs of Apple’s 2007 vintage MacBook Air or anorexic versions of current ultraportables.
One curiosity about the whole ultrabook hype is that it won’t be affected by the HDD shortage like the rest of the industry, as most ultrabooks rely on solid state storage instead. Market watchers believe ultrabooks could account for 20 to 30 percent of all notebook shipments in 2012.
