Nexus 7 sales close in on one million per month

Asus CFO spills the beans

Sales of Google’s Nexus 7 tablet could soon hit one million units per month, according to Asus CFO David Chang.

In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, Chang said monthly sales are picking up and nearing the one million mark.

"At the beginning, it was, for instance, 500K units a month, then maybe 600, 700K. This latest month, it was close to 1 million," he said. That adds up to about three million units since launch.

Google’s decision to introduce a new 32GB version of the tablet and slash prices could help the Nexus 7 push beyond six-figure sales. It will also be very interesting to see how Google’s new Nexus 10 performs. Up till now, only cheap Android tablets like the Nexus 7 and Kindle Fire managed to gain significant traction and ship in relatively high volumes. If consumers respond positively to a high-end device like the Nexus 10, we could see better days ahead for Android tablets and tablet-centric apps.

However, Google still has a (very) long way to go. Apple managed to sell a total of 14 million iPads in Q3 and it is entering Q4 with a refreshed 9.7-inch iPad along with the somewhat more affordable iPad mini. Lastly, Microsoft has also entered the fray with its Surface RT tablet and partners are also rolling out their Win RT tablets.

We wouldn’t describe the tablet market as a potential bubble just yet, but it’s starting to resemble a game of musical chairs. With high growth rates and overall sales, the music will stop sooner or later and leave at least one player hanging. And it won’t be Apple.
