Lenovo announces new Thinkpad X1 Tablet at CES 2016

Can turn into notebook, projector or 3D camera

There were plenty of notebooks and tablets at CES 2016 show but Lenovo's 12-inch ThinkPad X1 Tablet certainly caught our attention on the showfloor, promising to bring a business class tablet that can pretty much turn into three other devices with couple of add-on modules.

Featuring a 12-inch 3:2 aspect ratio 2160x1440 resolution screen, which is the same resolution as you get with the Suface Pro 3, the Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Tablet is based on a wide choice of Intel's latest Core M CPUs, topping off with a Core m7 with vPro, 16GB of RAM and up to 1TB of PCIe NVMe storage as well as LTE-A support, suggest that Lenovo certainly aims at business users rather than an average consumer.

Thinkpad notebooks have been around for a long time and while certain people love the design, some certainly hate it but pretty much everyone recognize the design. What makes the ThinkPad X1 Tablet a bit different from the rest of the competition and for that matter a proper Thinkpad, is the optional Thinkpad keyboard, which includes the unforgettable trackpoint and can attach to the table in three adjustable typing angles.

The Thinkpad X1 Tablet also comes with so called add-on modules. To be precise, there will be three different add-on moduls, Productivity Module, Presenter Module and the 3D Imaging module. The Productivity Module gives you a couple of extra ports, including USB 3.0, HDMI and OneLink+ module for docking. It also includes an extra battery that gives the tablet additional 5 hours of battery, pushing the total battery life to up to 15 hours.

The Presenter Module features a pico projector and a HDMI port. The projector can create a 60-inch projection from about 2 meters. The 3D Imaging module is somewhat a novelty as it features an Intel Realsense 3D camera, which can scan objects into some applications.

We had a chance to check out the ThinkPad X1 Tablet at CES 2016 showfloor and while it was quite interesting, the add-on modules are a bit tricky to attach, but overall, it feels like a solid tablet meant for business users rather than an average consumer.

Lenovo says that the Thinkpad X1 Tablet will go on sale in February with a starting price of US $899 and it is already listed at Lenovo's website in the US. The Productivity Module will retail for US $149, Presenter Module for US $279 and 3D Imaging module for US $149. You can also get an optional digitizer pen which sells for US $49.
