Undercutting the market

Acer's new ultra-thin Aspire S 13 raised a few eyebrows by charging $699 for what many other manufacturers would charge more than $1000. Now it is planning two more which will appear in September.

Jerry Kao, Acer's Notebook Business Group president said the pricing advantage will boost the devices' demand.

Dubbed the Aspire S 15 and S 17, both featuring a thickness of less than 17mmt hey should be ready for September's IFA show. Acer wants ultra-thin notebooks to account for 10 per cent of Acer's overall notebook shipments in 2016.

Commenting on the notebook market's first-quarter performance, Kao said that the market had weak performance in the quarter and all brand vendors were busy clearing their inventory. Acer is now seeing a healthy inventory and expects its shipments in 2016 to perform similar to 2015.

Kao told Digitimes that Acer also has several new  gaming PCs gettting ready. There is a 12-inch Switch Alpha 12 and the Chromebook 14 for Work with ruggedized chassis in the second quarter.
