Microsoft pulls Windows 10 support from Galileo 9Gag.com

Galileo Galileo Figaro.

Microsoft is pulling the support plug on Windows 10 IoT Core which was a key part of Intel’s low-cost Galileo boards.

Intel’s Arduino-compatible Galileo boards have Quark SoC X1000 chips but it appears that Redmond and Intel have had a change of heart about the boards.

In an update, a spokesMicrosoft said that while there had been some fantastic innovation with the platform Galileo did not meet the minimum hardware requirements for Windows 10 IoT Core.

Available free of charge, Windows 10 IoT Core is just one of seven flavours of Windows 10. It will still run on the Raspberry Pi 2, the Intel Atom-based MinnowBoard Max, and the Qualcomm Snapdragon-based DragonBoard 410c.

Apparently wiring support is now available on Windows 10 IoT Core running on Raspberry Pi 2 so that Galileo plans can be moved to that platform. Setup instructions for the operating system on Galileo boards have been removed from Redmond’s site.

Microsoft last year shipped developer kits for running Windows on Galileo boards. And in the run-up to the launch of Windows 10. Six months later the whole thing is toast.

We are surprised we thought that Microsoft was trying to get Windows 10 on anything and we expected our vacuum cleaner to be automatically updated to it any day now.
