A new challenger developed by Ubisoft

Action sports superstar Shaun White has a new video game surprise up his sleeve, and it isn’t another new snowboarding title. Instead, this time around Shaun White will be getting his own skateboarding title. The game, now known as “Shaun White Skateboarding,” is currently in development by Ubisoft Montreal.

White slipped word of the upcoming title himself recently in radio interview yesterday. The surprise announcement caught the folks at Ubisoft a little off guard, as they were not yet prepared to officially announce the game from what we can tell. White described the title as “…ready to melt minds.”

Shaun White Skateboarding had better be able to melt minds, as it will be entering a field that is already dominated by two established titles in the Electronic Arts Skate franchise and the Activision Tony Hawk franchise. While the Skate franchise has had the lead recently due to the Tony Hawk franchise taking a year off and its release of the Tony Ride offering with the skateboard peripheral that failed to win over players. Electronic Arts will be releasing its third installment in the Skate franchise on May 18th.

White’s first Snowboarding release seriously failed to set the world on fire with sales on all platforms (except the Wii) best described as flat. The second release in the Snowboarding series was a White-only release for the Wii, which is said to have done well.

While Ubisoft has yet to officially confirm anything, our sources tell us that beyond the fact that it is being developed by Ubisoft Montreal, it will be using the Assassin’s Creed engine as the previous Shaun White Snowboarding title did. It is being developed for Xbox 360, PS3, Wii and PC to start with, and with DSi and PSP versions possible. It is scheduled to be released this holiday season and we expect to see an official announcement from Ubisoft soon.
