Developer DICE has confirmed that some titles using the Frostbite 2 engine on the PC that will be released in 2013, will require a 64-bit OS. While the developer did not say which titles maybe included in the Electronic Arts 2013 release schedule for the PC that might require a 64-bit OS, the developer did suggest that if you are on a 32-bit OS, you might want to start thinking about the future.
Since the DICE developed Frostbite engine is being used by other studios within the EA family of studios, it is difficult to say which titles could be part of those that will require 64-bit OS support. We do know that the PC version of Medal of Honor: Warfighter that is due later this year, does use the Frostbite 2 engine, but it will not require a 64-bit OS according to what we have been told by our sources.
It could be that next Battlefield title for the PC might be the first title to take advantage of the 64-bit OS support in the Frostbite engine on the PC. Neither DICE or EA would confirm if this is the case. EA has been very supportive of the use of the Frostbite engine because unlike other engine’s that require licensing, since EA owns DICE, EA studios do not have to pay for the use of the Frostbite engine. So far DICE and EA have not opted to license the engine for use outside of EA owned studios.
