Valve's steam survey December results

Valve's "Steam Survey" results for December 2024 indicate a notable upward trend for Linux gaming statistics.

The survey reflects a 0.29 per cent increase in market share for Linux, rising from 2.03 per cent in November to 2.29 per cent in December.

Among Linux gamers, SteamOS Holo stands out, accounting for approximately 36 per cent of all users. SteamOS Holo, the operating system of the Steam Deck, is gaining traction on other devices as well. A significant driver of this growth is the Steam Deck itself, which relies on a custom AMD SoC/APU. AMD's popularity with Linux gamers and enthusiasts is attributed to its open-source driver support, resulting in AMD CPU usage commanding a 73.6 per cent market share among Linux users.

According to TechSpot, "December saw AMD reach another record-high share among participants of Valve's survey," with an increase of 3.02 per cent, bringing its total to 38.7 per cent. In contrast, Intel experienced a slight decline, falling to 63.4 per cent.

Windows 11 has solidified its position as the most popular operating system in the survey, pulling ahead by 2 per cent to nearly 55 per cent in December, as Windows 10's share dropped to 42.3 per cent. However, global statistics paint a different picture: Windows 10's share has risen for two consecutive months to 62.7 per cent, while Windows 11 has declined to 34.1 per cent.

Rounding out the survey, 16GB of RAM remains the most popular configuration, though its lead is diminishing as 32GB configurations gain ground—a trend mirrored in the VRAM category.

Phoronix further adds that Windows' overall market share decreased by 0.51 per cent, settling at 96.1 per cent, while Apple macOS saw a modest gain of 0.22 per cent, reaching 1.61 per cent market share.
