AI Texture Filtering updates and Tessellation Controlls

AMD has just released a new version of its Catalyst drivers, the Catalyst 11.2. The new driver supports all the cards ranging from ATI Radeon HD 2000 series to AMD Radeon HD 6000 series cards and brings quite a few new features as well as a couple of perfromance improvements.

The new features include the Catalyst AI Texture Filtering updates, the new Tessellation Controls and support for Video Quality settings during Blu-ray 3D playback.

The AI Texture Filtering updates bring an improved Quality setting that will match the "high quality" but will also bring an optimization that limits trilinear anisotropic filtering to areas surrounding texture mipmap level transitions while the rest will be done with bilinear filtering. AMD says that this improves overall performance without affecting imaging quality. The performance setting has been updated as well and this one fixes the sharpness that was causing shimmering in certain cases. It now has smoother filtering while preserving improved detail.

The Tessellation Controls feature will be supported on the Radeon HD 5000 and HD 6000 series graphics cards and will give users new settings for full control over Tessellation levels used in applications as well as the Morphological anti-aliasing support for Radeon HD 5000 series.

The Radeon HD 6000 series will get Video Quality settings tab for Blu-ray 3D playback.

Performance improvements include Call of Duty: Black Ops and Batman Arkham Asylum which are working up to 11 percent and up to 4 percent on the Radeon HD 5000 series single card configurations while anisotropic filtering and anti-aliasing are enabled in case of Call of Duty: Black Ops and when these are disabled, in Batman Arkham Asylum.

The new driver can be downloaded here.
