Rumour: Apple Watch manufacturing halved

by on24 March 2015

Technical issues or soft demand?

A nasty rumour about the Apple Watch simply refuses to die, and now there’s a bit more info on Apple’s smartwatch blues.

According to money.udn.com, Apple’s supply chain is in trouble and manufacturing isn’t going well, either. It recently emerged that Quanta was struggling with Apple Watch production and suffering from a 70 percent defect rate.

The new report claims that LG is having trouble supplying enough displays for the Apple Watch, so Cupertino was forced to halve manufacturing. Instead of getting 3 million units at launch, it appears Apple will have just 1.5 million from the first run. Some estimates even put Quanta’s production of the fruity smartwatch at 300,000 units per month, which is a drop in the bucket given some analysts’ estimates for strong demand.

However, while most analysts remain bullish, there is no shortage of dissenting voices from commentators and industry leaders.

We can now add Apple founder Steve Wozniak to the growing list of Apple Watch critics. In a recent interview, the great Woz said he likes the idea behind the Apple Watch, but doesn’t agree with the way Apple is choosing to market it.

“The fact is the difference between a $10,000 watch and a $17,000 watch is only the band, and for an engineer like me I don’t live in that world, that’s not my world,” Woz told the Australian Financial Review.
