Timex Acquires Inspiration From Withings

by on15 September 2015

Timex analog activity tracking watch is a version of Withings Activite.

Traditional watch makers are still looking for the perfect formula for staying relevant in the era of the smartwatch. Analog activity tracking is one good idea and Timex is trying it out with Metropolitan+.

The American maker of affordable and stylish analog watches already launched its digital activity tracker aimed at dedicated sportspeople. Now it's changing the formula for a go at the more casual market.

Withings has already done it with the beautiful Activite and the cheaper Activite Pop. Timex is now following suit.

We have basically no details, other than what can be gleaned from the photo posted by Engadget, and below. The watch certainly looks good, even though the design has been tried and tested before.

To be fair, Timex's watch does seem to have more capabilities than Activite (Pop), judging by the smallest dial where we can see the "off", "o", "d" and "s" settings. Honestly, no idea what those are, but we'll surely find out soon enough.

And for the Fudzilla two cents on the entire analog activity tracking idea, it's definitely a good one, but one thing bothers us. The activity scale on both the Activite and Timex Metropolitan+ goes only to 100. We like to set our daily goal to a sufficient, but not overly aggressive number. 9,000 steps for example. That way, when we make 15,000 or more steps, which happens pretty often, we can be proud of ourselves for not just reaching, but overreaching our goal by a big fat margin. That definitely brings psychological reward.

To stare at a scale which stops at 100 will never be as satisfying. Something to think about for the next years' models.
