Acer plans VR backpack

Only for businesses

While most of the world is looking at VR for games, it appears Acer wants to target its VR backpack for the business to business (B2B) market.

Acer has said that it will launch a virtual reality (VR) backpack for 2017, but don’t expect to be playing Doom on it as it will be flogged as part of Acer’s business division.

The thought was that Acer would be flogging the StarVR head-worn VR device for gaming computers particularly as it had partnered with Sweden-based game developer Starbreeze on development.

But apparently it is the business and entertainment market which Acer thinks has the most viability. Acer and Starbreeze's head-worn VR device has already begun to supply to IMAX's VR experience centre and the device's shipments are expected to grow significantly in 2017.

Acer has already taken over the R&D and manufacturing of the StarVR and is considering outsourcing the production to outside makers if shipments start increasing.

All this will be a surprise to many given that Acer famously said no to VR and Acer's boss Jason Chen says his company will not make its own VR devices and will focus on getting its gaming products to work with the existing VR platforms.
