Exactly a year ago, Samsung introduced its Portable SSD T1, a small pocket-sized SSD designed as a fast external storage for professionals. Today, at CES 2016 show, Samsung has announced the new Portable SSD T3 which will be available in standard 250GB, 500GB and 1TB capacities as well as the new 2TB capacity. Recently, Samsung switched to the new 48-layer 3D V-NAND technology, which is most likely how it managed to squeeze in 2TB is such a small chassis. 

Samsung's new Portable SSD T3 also managed to snatch the CES Innovation Awards Honoree 2016 award and it is pretty much based on the same design as the earlier available Portable SSD T3, but uses a metal chassis which should add a bit more weight and make it a bit more sturdy. 

In addition to the new chassis design, Samsung also included the new USB 3.1 Type-C interface, making it compatible with new motherboards and upcoming USB 3.1 Type-C equipped devices. According to the specification page, the Samsung Portable SSD T3 should offer up to 450MB/s of sequential performance and it is probably based on the same mSATA SSD. 

It also comes with AES 256-bit hardware encryption and optional password settings for security.

Unfortunately, Samsung did not unveil the price, but did say that the new Portable SSD T3 is backed by a 3-year warranty and should ship in February in the USA, China, Korea and select European countries.
