Google pulls the plug on Nexus One

by on20 July 2010

Martyr in the Android cause
Google has quietly announced that it has discontinued its Nexus One handset. Google managed to sell some 135,000 units since the phone was introduced in January.

The move comes as no surprise, as the Nexus never really took off. However, it should not be considered a downright failure.

Google has managed to gain a strong foothold in the smartphone OS market and several vendors are currently offering Android phones in all shapes and sizes. It appears that Google was not too keen on pursuing the retail market, so theirs is a strong chance that it will let vendors develop and sell Android phones as they please.

Mind you, compared to Microsoft’s Kin, the Nexus One looked and performed like a winner. However, good reviews weren’t enough to keep Google’s interest alive.
