Of course, not all will be smartphones. Samsung believes 120 million will be feature phones, while a smartphones will account for a whopping 390 million units. What’s more, Samsung is not solely focusing on Andrpid. Windows Phone 8 and Tizen devices are also in the mix.
However, it is still unclear how many WP8 and Tizen devices Samsung hopes to sell. They will probably be dwarfed by Android shipments, but Samsung wouldn’t be wasting time on alternative platforms for no reason. WP8 is becoming an increasingly interesting alternative for users fed up with Android fragmentation and update issues.
Samsung is also investing heavily in new manufacturing sites. It is throwing $2.2 billion at its plants in Vietnam, while at the same time relying on facilities in China, Korea and India.
