Facebook Home officially announced

by on04 April 2013

Coming to select Android smartphones on April 12

As expected, Facebook has launched its new Home for Android, a launcher that replaces your home screen with, what Facebook calls, Cover Feed. Facebook describe Home as a new way to turn your Android phone into a great, living, social smartphone.

Cover Feed replaces both your home screen and lock screen and gives you all the updates and notifications that you might have on your Facebook account. Since it replaces both the lock and home screen, the moment you wake your phone you become immersed or annoyed by it, depending on how much do you actually like and use Facebook. You can flip through the content stories and double tap in case you are interested in something.

The new Facebook Home also integrates with messaging part of the smartphone and this feature Facebook decided to call "Chat heads". According to that video below, when message is sent to you on Facebook, you'll should see a floating image of the sender and the message. It also takes over your standard SMS system and does the same chat heads thing with it too.

Notifications also get a seperate part and you'll be getting yours with profile pictures from those friends that have sent them. Gestures with notifications include swipe to hide, tap to open, or even hold to stack in case you want to clear them all.

Facebook Home sounds pretty neat and it is certainly better than Facebook's current app on Android, which is rubbish. On the other hand, we have a strange felling that an average user who actually uses its smartphone for something other than Facebook, might just find it too annoying.

The Facebook Home will be available as a free download from Google Play store as of April 12. According to Facebook it will work on the HTC One (when you actually manage to buy one), One X, One X+, Samsung Galaxy S III, Galaxy Note II and Galaxy S4 once it finally shows up in retail/e-tail. Facebook also promises support for more devices in the coming months.

The Facebook Home will also be pre-installed on smartphones that are a part of the "Facebook Home Program". HTC and AT&T have partnered up to be the first that will deliver such a smartphone, the HTC First that will be available on April 12 as well.
