It seems that we were spot on.
According to Korean tech site ETnews.com, the Galaxy S and the Galaxy Note are about to lose their flagship status. The site reports that Samsung launched a premium smartphone development project and that the new phones will be part of the F-series. Whether this is just F or Galaxy F remains to be seen, although the latter seems more likely.
The first device is expected to appear next March, so it could even coincide with the next Galaxy S launch. There are even a couple of rumoured specs, although we’re not sure you should believe them – the phone is said to feature an Exynos octa-core and a 16-megapixel camera.
If true, this would also pose a bit of a challenge in terms of pricing and product positioning. It’s a bit like doing an iPhone 5C in reverse. Samsung would be adding a premium product, but it would still have to be cautious with pricing, so either it will introduce the F-series at S-series pricing and slash the launch price of the 5S, or it could charge a premium for the F-series. Or both.
