LG G3 5.5-inch phone officially out

by on28 May 2014

Quad HD 2560x1440 resolution

LG has finally introduced its flagship G3 phone. Most of the specs that were leaked prior the launch were correct, but we will list some of the most important ones.

It is a 5.5-inch phone with a 2560x1440 resolution display, which amounts to 538 pixels per inch. This is the highest resolution phone to date that was launched by a major brand. The phone is 0.3 inches larger than the last year’s LG G2 and strangely enough it has the same 3000 mAh battery.

The fact that LG G3 has much higher resolution and slightly bigger screen means that battery life could be slightly worse than last years with LG G2. However, that does not have to be the case.

Qualcomm runs the show

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 801 runs the phone and it works at 2.46GHz. This is currently the best available mobile phone processor that supports LTE Advanced with speeds up to 150 Mbit per second. It also comes with Adreno 330 graphics that should end up 50 percent faster than Adreno 320 graphics used in the Snapdragon 600.

Compared to the Snapdragon 800 you will get a 146 MHz faster clock and it will be hard to notice the difference between the Snapdragon 800 and 801 in everyday tasks.

The phone comes with a 13-megapixel camera with optical image stabilization, laser autofocus and a front facing 2.1-megapixel camera. The phone comes with 2GB RAM and 16GB storage or 3GB RAM and 32GB storage, depending on the model and it comes with additional microSD slot that supports cards up to 128GB.

Plenty of pricey pixels

The phones come with Android 4.4.2 and measures 146.3 x 74.6 x 8.9mm. It weighs 149 grams. Many will like the fact that 3000mAh battery is removable. The phone is not made of metal but rather metal looking brushed plastic which might not be a turn on for many, but at least it allowed the designers to integrate a removable battery and made the phone relatively light for its size.

LG G3 back

The most attractive feature for most potential customers is the screen. It’s what makes this phone special compared to the Samsung Galaxy S5 and HTC One M8. The fact that LG G3 has 5.5 inch screen puts it in competition with the Galaxy Note 3, and with a resolution of 2560x1440 and 538 pixels per inch, the LG G3 is the clear winner. Luckily for Samsung there is a Galaxy Note 4 coming later this year with a higher resolution that will make LG G3 run for its money. However, we’re not sure such a high resolution makes a difference in the real world.

The European price for the LG G3 is €599 and in most countries you can expect to be able to buy it before the end of June, so roughly a month from now. It’s not cheap, but neither are its direct competitors.
