Nokia to return to phones in 2015

by on23 December 2014

More away from Windows Phone

We have learned from sources in Nokia, by which mean the part that remained in Finland, that the brand will return to the phone market in the course of 2015.

The Nokia N1 tablet is just the first piece of the puzzle and this is a device completely manufactured outside of Nokia’s normal standards. An unnamed ODM is making the N1 tablet and this will be Nokia's first return product in 2015.

Nokia plans to ship this tablet in Q1 2015 (January 1st till March 31st) of the coming year, but our sources assured us that the company is working hard on the phones front as well. The Nokia brand is still strong and the company wants to take advantage of it.

The phone is being developed jointly by the ODMs and Nokia. We suspect that the phone runs Android, just like the N1 tablet, but we don’t have any details to report. We expect to see the Z launcher running on new Nokia phones as well as Here maps. We would not be surprised if the phone borrows some design ideas from the N1 tablet, as the tablet looks really good.

Here’s another reminder in case you missed it - this phone is not coming from the Nokia arm that was acquired by Microsoft - this is the Nokia that stayed under control of the Finnish part of the company. Microsoft will continue making its Microsoft Lumia phones, with people that it acquired in the Nokia smartphone acquisition. Let the competition begin.
