18.4-inch tablet with low pixel density

After plenty of rumors, Samsung has now officially announced its 18.4-inch Galaxy View tablet.

Measuring 275.8 x 451.8 x 11.9mm with 2.65kg of weight, the Samsung Galaxy View is not exactly what we would call a portable system, although it does have a handle.

Designed around a large 18.4-inch TFT LCD display with 1920x1080 resolution, which adds up to rather low 123ppi pixel density (at least compared to current standards), the new Samsung Galaxy View tablet is powered by yet to be detailed octa-core SoC clocked at 1.6GHz, 2GB of RAM, 32/64GB of internal storage, expandable via microSD card slot and a 5700mAh battery capable of keeping it alive for around eight hours of video playback.

According to Samsung, the company aims to deliver "an unprecedented mobile entertainment experience by streaming video and media content on the largest Android mobile device on the market," which is quite a surprising statement considering that the Galaxy View tablet has a rather entry-level 1080p screen with 123ppi pixel density. Today, when 2K and 4K/UHD videos are slowly becoming more and more popular, pushing for 1080p video device is rather surprising.

The rest of the specifications include a 2.1-megapixel front camera, 802.11ac WiFi and Bluetooth 4.1, microUSB 2.0 port, optional LTE with nanoSIM slot, high quality 4W stereo speakers and Android 5.1 Lollipop OS.

As we said, at 2.65kg, the Galaxy View is rather heavy device, so Samsung has designed a built-in kickstand that actually has a handle. Although we doubt that we will see anyone carrying the Galaxy View as a briefcase, stranger things have happened before.

Samsung has not announced the precise availability date or the price but some early listings point to a US $599 price tag.
