Helio P20 brings 6GB LPDDR4X with 45 percent less power

Better camera using Bayer and Mono sensors

Last week we told you about the Helio P20 and we were surprised that MediaTek has decided to share so many details about its first 16nm FinFET mainstream processor.

In addition to the eight core A53 at 2.3GHz and the new T880 MP2 GPUs there are at least two more interesting aspects of this mainstream SoC.

Samsung Chiwook Kim, Memory Product Planning & Application Engineering Team's Vice President jumped the gun with a LPDDR4X announcement. He mentioned that you can install 6GB of memory using Samsung's 20nm manufacturing process. This explains how much maximum memory will you see on the Helio P20 devices later this year.

Samsung will not manufacture this new memory, apparently SK Hynix will make the LPDDR4X.The LPDDR4X needs much less juice compared to LPDDR4. The LPDDR4 needs 1.1V while the new LPDDR4X needs 0.6V – 45 percent less. This is a huge saving as every mAh of battery counts.

The second innovation that will be a step up for MediaTek in the mainstream/ performance market is its new camera technology. The new P20 has an exclusive MediaTek Imagiq Image Signal Processor (ISP). MediaTek's Sr. Vice President & CTO Kevin Jou, has pointed out an important part of good camera capability is the advanced 12bit Dual ISP supports Bayer and Mono sensors. These sensors improve picture quality by reducing noise and capturing three times more light than conventional Bayer + Bayer sensors.

This will enable cameras on Helio P20 devices to capture more light which will result in better picture quality even in low light conditions. MediaTek has proven that it can develop great camera technologies. The Helio P10 on Meizu MX5 takes amazing pictures and has great results in 4K video.

The new dual phase-detection autofocus helps create a real-time auto focus that is four times faster than traditional systems. The 3A HW engine upgrades the image for more natural, responsive and detailed photographs

A part of the new Imagiq is the powerful multi-scale temporal de-noising technology that renders videos and photography more accurately, with less noise, even in low light. There is a huge investment that is taking the place on the multimedia features of the SoC.

The second half of 2016 looks optimistic and with some important designs happening in late 2016 when company plans to launch  phones in USA . The phone has all that AT&T and Verizon / T-Mobile want – Cat 6. 300 Mbit/50 Mbit modem supporting carrier aggregation. This modem has found its place in the Helio P10, X20 and P20 so far.
