Blackberry losing Android sales too

Blackberry will have to slam the priv door

It is starting to look like Blackberry is not getting enough sales from its Android products to justify a mobile handset presence.

In the US AT&T have said that the Priv is struggling and returns are far too high. Apparently Blackberry fans could not make the transition to Android and Android fans would not buy a Blackberry.

Another issue was the price. AT&T claimed that BlackBerry's decision to market the phone as a high-end device also hurt its prospects, the executive said. The Priv initially sold unlocked for $699, only Apple and Samsung can really pull that sort of price off.

BlackBerry in April reported selling 600,000 phones in its fiscal fourth quarter that ended 29 February, well below expectations of 850,000 for the quarter -- and below the 700,000 it sold in the preceding quarter.

BlackBerry insisted that the company was still on the path to profitability this year, however it is starting to look like BlackBerry CEO John Chen may be inching closer to dumping hardware to do it.

Chen said in October that the company would exit the phone business, which has been on life support for years, if it cannot turn a profit in 2016.
