AT&T customers can now text using Amazon's Alexa

Companies also form retail partnership

This Saturday, American AT&T mobile customers will be able to send text messages at home and in the workplace using Amazon’s cylindrical and hockey puck-shaped Echo devices.

Amazon’s voice-activated assistant Alexa will now be able to “have AT&T text” a contact’s name followed by a message. The one drawback, however, is that Alexa can only store up to 10 contacts on an Echo device, and users will need to voice them out one at a time before the assistant becomes familiar with their names.

It is currently unclear whether the voice assistant will read messages aloud prior to sending them, so this may only be useful for quick messages or anything generally safe for work. According to AT&T, “content of texts sent by AT&T are determined by Alexa’s reading of your voice commands,” and it would only make sense to repeat messages back to a user prior to sending them out.

AT&T also managed to score a partnership with Amazon and will start selling Echo and Echo Dot devices starting November 18th in its retail stores and online. The devices will be offered at the same Amazon.com listed prices of $179.99 and $49.99, respectively, though it looks like Amazon itself will continue to offer bulk discounts as it really wants people to spread these devices all over their homes and workplaces.
