Nougat starts to make an impact

by on10 February 2017

Still low

The latest Android version has finally managed to appear on more than one percent of phones.

According to Google’s Android distribution figures, there is a 0.3 percent share for Nougat 7.1 and a 0.9 percent share for Nougat 7.0. It seems that the adoption of the first Nougat version rose the most, by 0.4 percent compared to 0.1 percent for Nougat 7.1. The two combined Nougat versions now hold a share of 1.2 percent, up 0.5 percent compared to last month.

Given that most premium smartphones run Android 7.0 Nougat and many have just released updates for the first Nougat version, we would have thought that the figure might have been a bit higher.

Samsung, Motorola, HTC and Sony release Android 7.0 updates to their flagships and even mid-range phones. To be fair it might have been because these rollouts were postponed because of unforeseen bugs.

We expect that Nougat 7.0 distribution numbers will continue to grow this month.

Marshmallow increased its share, while Lollipop continued to decline

Moving on, Marshmallow 6.0 managed to rise 1.1 percent compared to last month’s share of 29.6 percent, while Lollipop 5.0 saw a 0.3 percent drop to 9.8 percent. Lollipop 5.1 dropped 0.2 percent to 23.1 percent.

Marshmallow is expected to continue to grow as OEMs are still releasing low-end and mid-range phones running Android 6.0, leaving Nougat for higher-end models.

Kitkat is now installed on 21.9 percent of all Android-running smartphones, down 0.7 percent, while Jelly Bean runs on 11.3 percent of phones, dropping 0.3 percent.

Ice Cream Sandwich holds a one percent share, so does Gingerbread which won’t be included in the Android Distribution chart anymore when it drops below one percent.
