Ahead of planned schedule

Intel has unveiled its latest XMM 8160 5G modem, which supports both the older standard but also brings 5G speeds with peak speeds of up to 6Gbps.

According to details provided by Intel, the release of the XMM 8160 5G multi-mode modem was actually pulled forward by over six months, despite the fact that it won't ship before the second half of 2019, with first products expected in the first half of 2020.

As this is a multi-mode modem, it will have support for 2G, 3G and 4G, as well as 5G (including standalone (SA) and non-standalone (NSA) modes), and covers both short range/high bandwidth mmWave, and the 5G NR ranging from 600MHz to 6GHz (FDD and TDD bands).

Intel did not provide a lot of details, other than we can expect peak speeds of up to 6Gbps, which, according to Intel, makes it three to six times faster than the latest LTE modems available today.

Of course, Intel did not share any details regarding its customers, but the best bet is that we can expect Apple's iPhone to pack this chip when it comes in 2020.
