AMD claims more than 85 sever motherboards and barebones are capable of supporting its new 45nm Shanghai quad-core Opterons. Asus, Supermicro and Tyan are currently shipping these motherboards for OEMs, ODMs and business customers.

AMD is boasting unbeatable price/performance per watt for its new 45nm server parts. The really good news is that these are the first AMD 45nm parts, albeit they're reserved for the server market. The troubled chipmaker is getting the hang of the new production process and if all goes well we're hoping to see the first 45nm desktop parts in December.

The new Opterons should launch next week and we already wrote about them here and this is a nice cash cow for AMD who already has a hard time to compete to man Xeon-based on Core 2 or upcoming Corei7 Nehalem architecture. Let's just forget about Barcelona K10 as the time of 45nm K10.5 Shanghai, bug-free has come.
