Intel is planning to release a new CPU for thin and light notebooks based on its Core architecture later this year, just in time to take on AMD's Neo platform.

The new CPU (which is NOT codenamed Agent Smith, sub.ed.), should be a tweak of current ULV models and allow vendors to design thin notebooks, measuring less than one inch at the waistline.

Its package will measure 22x22mm, but we don't know anything about the TDP so far. Intel's ULV CPUs have a TDP of under 10W, while its Atom N270, used on most netbooks, has a TDP of 4W.

Earlier at CES, AMD announced its Neo platform for thin and cheap notebooks, and some vendors have already announced Neo based notebooks. Also, Intel doesn't want to see its Atom CPU used in notebooks or netbooks with a screen in excess of 10 inches, an unpopular decision which makes sense if the outfit is planning to launch a CPU designed specifically for such machines.
